What is the function of gravity?
 
A grounding. I think the function of gravity is to keep everything on the earth and not floating out into space!  In the case of the physists in the elevator, born and brought up inside the elevator, they have a completely different perspective of existence than we do as observers on the outside. Our sense of gravity is different from someone accelerating downward in the elevator. A dropped handkerchief floats in mid air and if pushed, moves vertically to hit the wall of the elevator. At Disneyworld there is the tower of terror elevator that drops people or pulls the elevator down faster than the speed of gravity for a temporary feeling of weightlessness. Another example is a the roundup ride at the fair uses centrifical force to push you back against the wall emulating a stronger sense of gravity. So, again, what is the purpose of gravity? I'm not really sure!!!

8/8/18 Bionics: The development of a bionic person and it's use in the military

8/8/18 Supporting Bionics for Humans? My first feeling about this topic is that I would support the option of bionics for humans in need of limbs, in place of old prosthetic limbs that have previously existed. I have not had to worry about this personally for myself or any of my family members, but I imagine that for someone who does, advances in science in this field are really important for having a more functional, happy life. I had a childhood friend who didn’t need a prosthetic limb, but was disabled and needed braces from the waist down as a child to assist with walking. These things were heavy, stiff, ugly and just archaic! It sounds like newer developments are moving toward more sophisticated options that are more accessible for average people. The UK based tech company mentioned in our readings is using 3-D printing technology to create prosthetic limbs which are more affordable. This sounds like a good thing. 7/30/18 I know I am a living system because..... Wow! Crazy how things can become not so black and white when you begin to look into what is considered a living thing. According to NASA, all living things share a carbon based chemistry, depend on water, or leave behind a fossil with carbon or sulfur isotopes that point to a past metabolism. Scientists struggle to define "life." From what I have read so far, it seems like something could be considered living and have certain characteristics of life, while others may be "alive"  and have slightly different characteristics. Crystals are interesting. They can grow and respond to stimuli but lack a nervous system. I believe there are many different forms of life and we can see things as living that are not what we would expect. In a Native American perspective even rocks are infused with spirit, is that a living thing?
