My name is Alison Kelly and I live and work in Sonoma. I have been an herbalist for the past 15 years studying and teaching classes in herbal medicine making, nutritional benefits of herbs and herbal teamaking. In 2016 I co-taught a series of essential oils for self care classes for Sonoma Valley Hospital staff, and completed a year long certificate program in Health Navigation at Sonoma State. I have a small herbal products company and currently make and sell a savory herbal seasoning locally in Sonoma, work as a natural foods personal home cook, food artisan and soupmaker. I am also participating in a acupuncture tutorial program at Sonoma Valley Acupuncture and Herb Center and am excited to be learning about Chinese medicine.

My first feeling about this topic is that I would support the option of bionics for humans in need of limbs, in place of old prosthetic limbs that have previously existed. I have not had to worry about this personally for myself or any of my family members, but I imagine that for someone who does, advances in science in this field are really important for having a more functional, happy life. 7/30/18 I know I am a living system because..... Wow! Crazy how things can become not so black and white when you begin to look into what is considered a living thing. According to NASA, all living things share a carbon based chemistry, depend on water, or leave behind a fossil with carbon or sulfur isotopes that point to a past metabolism. Scientists struggle to define "life." From what I have read so far, it seems like something could be considered living and have certain characteristics of life, while others may be "alive"  and have slightly different characteristics. Crystals are interesting. They can grow and respond to stimuli but lack a nervous system. I believe there are many different forms of life and we can see things as living that are not what we would expect. In a Native American perspective even rocks are infused with spirit, is that a living thing?
